Ellie and her friends experienced extremely hard conflicts throughout there time in 'hell'. There main conflict was always with the soldiers that invaded there town, Wirawee and how they dealt with it. First there conflict was with themselves. Having to come to realization that they had no idea how there families were. Then having to pull it together and plan how to react appropriately. Second, there different ways of attacking the soldiers and sabotaging there plans. Finally having to make an extremely hard choice after one group member was injured.

In the last couple chapters Ellie, Fi, Lee, and Homer took a trip to one of the bridges leading into the town. They planned to blow up the bridge because it seemed to be one of the main ways that soldiers were travelling. As insane as the idea sounded they managed to make it work by distracting the soldiers on watch with a stampede of a near by cattle. They found a tractor and drove under the bridge, covered it with fuel and blew it up. Everything was fine until they returned to there meeting point with the others at Ellie's old house. Corrie had been shot in the back and now they faced another huge decision. Since a near by hospital was still running they decided that one group member would drive her there, Kevin. This meant leaving him completely vulnerable because of the dangers of being shot, tortured, and becoming imprisoned. The others returned to where they had made camp in 'hell' left wondering what would happen to there beloved friends.

Kevin was left with having to make a choice of either dropping off the car outside the hospital, setting an alarm and running for cover hoping they would find Corrie in the car or taking her himself right into the hospital risking everything. If it was someone you loved and considered family, would you run away or stay and take your chances?
